The East West Economic Corridor, which connects Da Naing, Vietnam to the Greater Yangon, is the one of important international logistic highway shaving 1,481 kilometers in total length. According to the study, the daily traffic volume between Thaton and Yangon is estimated to be around 93,000 vehicles in 2045 which is around 8 times of the daily traffic volume in 2017 (around 10,000 vehicles). Especially, the heavy traffic congestion and deterioration of road safety are predicted to occur due to the mixture of regional traffic and transit traffic because the existing road passes through the urban area from Bago to Kyaikto section which is 100km away from Thaton.
Thus, JICA agreed to start a collaborative project with Asian Development Bank (ADB) to construct a new highway between Bago and Kyaikto not passing through the urban area. JICA was in charge of the Feasibility Study (F/S) for the bridge section across the Sittaung River, called as New Sittaung Bridge, while ADB will implement the other road sections.

OCT’s graphic team provided video presentation to the client. The project road is going to operate as an access controlled 4-lane expressway. The New Sittaung Bridge is a large-scale bridge, having 2km in total length which consists of steel narrow box girder bridge of 800m and approaching precast concrete composite girder bridges of 1200m on both sides of the river. In this bridge construction, the presentation shows that Japanese advanced technology is going to be applied such as steel narrow box girder, steel pipe sheet pile foundation, and precast concrete composite girder.
